Nieuwsgierigheid is de gezamenlijke drijfveer van kunstenaars en wetenschappers. En de beste manier om deze nieuwsgierigheid te bevredigen is het doen van een experiment. De Spullenmannen vertellen in deze fluxlezing hoe ze een brug slaan tussen kunst en wetenschap en hoe met oude apparaten de wetten der natuur ontrafeld kunnen worden.

De Spullenmannen is een kunstenaarscollectief uit Amersfoort. Ze maken theater, installaties, beeldende kunst en doen uitvindingen-waar-niemand-op-zit-te-wachten.

Het loopt storm voor iPhone-cursus

Er is een overweldigende belangstelling voor gratis cursus programmeren voor de iPhone die het informatica-instuut LIACS aanbiedt.

‘Er zijn inmiddels vierhonderd aanmeldingen’ vertelt onderwijscoördinator Annebeth Simonsz van de master Media Technology. ‘Ik had een zaal gereserveerd bij Sociale Wetenschappen waar honderd man in passen, dus ik ben hard op zoek naar extra ruimte.’

Het LIACS biedt een cursus aan van twee vrijdagmiddagen en week huiswerk, waarin de deelnemers kunnen leren om programmaatjes te schrijven voor Apples gadget-telefoon met bewegingsdetector en touchscreen. De docenten zijn Media Technology-alumnus Rick Companje en professor Bas Haring. Deelnemers hoeven geen iPhone te hebben, maar moeten wel kunnen programmeren.

Simonsz: ‘In de flyer staat dat we de voorkeur geven aan studenten en scholieren, dus we zullen straks moeten selecteren. Die vierhonderd mensen zijn vooral studenten van universiteit en HBO, maar ook scholieren. Daarnaast zijn het mensen uit de omgeving met kleine bedrijfjes, of gewoon belangstellenden. Die laatste groep wil je eigenlijk ook bedienen, maar het gaat gewoon niet. We zijn nog aan het overwegen of we de cursus later nog een keer gaan geven of dat het bij een eenmalige actie blijft.’ BB

Lots of stuff out there communicates in certain electronic languages: internet, radio, television, telephones, computer screens, computer networks, USB devices, remote controls etc. This OpenToko will cover the similarities and differences between quite some protocols.

Edwin Dertien will kick-off this Toko giving a general introduction and supplying a context dividing the day in the 7 OSI-layers.

In the morning protocols within the low-level 'media layers' (physical layer etc.) will be covered. Followed by higher-level protocols from the 'host layers' in the afternoon. This sounds quite theoretical but of course lots of nice hands-on stuff will be supporting each layer (like MIDI devices, DMX controllers, VT100 keyboard from the 70's, DIY AM Radio, Arduino generating video signal, OpenSoundControl iPhone-MaxMSP link and more).

At March 7th, 2010 there will be an OpenToko workshop about iPhone Programming.

Leo van der Veen created the c74 App. c74 is an iPhone app that let’s you connect your device with Cycling ’74’s Max/MSP 5 and create custom layouts which can be operated directly from your iPhone. (read more…). In this OpenToko Leo will share his expertise on designing and programming applications for the iPhone. He will be covering the Objective-C programming language, XCode, Interface Builder and how to install your application on your iPhone.

In the second part of the workshop Rick Companje will explain about programming in C++ for the iPhone using OpenFrameworks. More information about OpenFrameworks for the iPhone can be found on this website.

This OpenToko is “hands-on”. If you want to join this OpenToko please bring your own laptop running Mac OSX (Leopard Mac OS X 10.5.5 or higher) that is capable of having the iPhone SDK installed on it. If you do not have the iPhone SDK yet, please go to http://developer.apple.com/iphone and register for free to download the SDK.

Nico en ik zijn met Globe4D sinds begin februari gevestigd in de oude luciferfabriek van Amersfoort aan de Kleine Koppel 40. We huren een plekje op de eerste verdieping in het gebouwencomplex dat tegenwoordig dienst doet als cultuur verzamelkantoor en creatieve broedplaats.

We zijn nu voorzien van alles wat we nodig hebben om Globe4D nog verder te kunnen doorontwikkelen en aan te kunnen bieden: kantoorruimte, een afgesloten vergaderruimte, een demonstratie ruimte voor de globe en de nodige opslag. Daarnaast huren we een deel van de werkplaats van De Spullenmannen waar we onze Globe4D modellen nog verder kunnen perfectionaliseren en waar we bezig zijn met de ontwikkeling van een aantal gloednieuwe nieuwe installaties!
